Kentucky Health Plans---A Few Tips to Know

Kentucky Health Plans

Kentucky health plans are available to individuals who are generally healthy. However, the individual must be relatively healthy in order to receive many Kentucky health plans. Many health insurance plans will not allow new customers to join their health plans if the customers have severe health problems such an insulin dependent diabetic.

A great way to be enrolled in many of the Kentucky health plans is to be hired into a company that offers health benefits to its employees. Most companies in Kentucky offer their employees health benefits after 90 days on the job.

Anyone can enroll in an insurance plan through their work because it is considered group coverage. Group plans usually are partially or even fully paid for by the employer.

Group Kentucky health plans are paid by the employer and the employee usually pays a very small percentage of the premium. On average the employee usually pays about 20% of the monthly premiums.

Because the employer is insuring a large group of people together the individual employees may not be asked about their health backgrounds. All the employees are underwritten as a whole group to determine the cost level that the employer will pay.

The amount of premium the employer will have to pay to insure its employees through a Kentucky health plans is dependent on how healthy the group of employees was when the coverage was purchased

Many insurance plans may not pay for pre-existing conditions regardless of whether the plan is a private plan or a group plan. A pre-existing condition is a condition the person had when his health coverage began.

If a person goes without health insurance for 63 consecutive days anything the person was diagnosed with before the 63 days is considered to be a preexisting condition. If a person loses his health coverage and the employer has more than 20 full time employees the federal government offers a program called COBRA, so that the person can keep his health coverage for 18 months as long as he pays the premiums.

Kentucky Family Health Insurance

Kentucky Family Health Insurance

Are you looking for Kentucky family health insurance?  If so, there are several things you should know.

Always deal with a local independant agent who specializes in Kentucky Health Plans and who represents all major health insurance companies – out-of-state agents may not know the details of the Kentucky plans and could very well (and many times indeed do) recommend the wrong plan
Avoid giving anyone your billing information over the phone until you have had a chance to review the plans on your own. Most carriers will bill you even for the initial premium payment.
Do not feel pressured. Take your time and understand the plan that you are about to purchase to insure your family.
The plans need to be explained in detail or you may end up getting stuck with hundreds or thousands in hospital or doctor bills after you come to find that your plan “doesn’t cover this or that…”

In Kentucky, there are many providers that cater to a family searching for health insurance that will sell you a “mini-med” plan.  You should know that this is NOT a comprehensive health insurance plan.  These plans are considerably cheaper, but when push comes to shove, they do not provide good benefits to you or your family.  Here, the golden rule applies, you will get what you pay for.

Do not be misled by an agent who assures you he or she can get you the best or lower rates.  ALL insurance rates are set by the government and there are no deals or discounts that can be offered.  Many times an agent will quote you a lower rate without taking your age or medications into account and then once the plan is issued you will receive a much higher monthly premium. Don’t be caught off guard!

Kentucky Individual Health Insurance - A Word of Caution

Whenever searching for Kentucky health plans we would encourage you to ask your agent for the plan benefits and what they include and do not include. Recently we have been speaking with too many people who are being taken advantage of by independent insurance agents.  We would like to caution you against applying for a “mini-med” insurance plan.  These are plans that happen to be much less expensive than a comprehensive major medical plan and so it is easy to sell a plan such as this to a prospective client.  Unfortunately, those plans will not provide any of the benefits that you would expect from an insurance plan.  When push comes to shove they will not provide the coverage you would like to have should something happen and you need to cash in on your benefits.

It is so easy for an independent agent to sell this plan because of its low cost, however what they are failing to tell you is the lack of benefits as mentioned above.  Should you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Kentucky Individual Health Insurance - Underwriting

Ever wonder what happens when you submit an application for Kentucky health insurance?  Well, it goes directly to medical underwriting.  This is the group which decides whether or not you are elibigle for coverage and at what rating tier.  If only there was a way to send them cookies…maybe they would offer more coverage to people and at better rates…hmm.

onesourcebenefits.net

Anyways, medical underwriting is the process of estimating the morbidity risk of an applicatnt for health coverage.  Various sources are used for estimating this risk; however, the most important is the application.

A few things to be aware of…

  • Decisions for applicants contemplating surgery will be postponed until surgery is completed

  • Applicants with several conditions may be declined due to the combination of conditions

  • The ratings on several conditions, including build, will be adjusted for age

  • Decisions for expectant parents will be postponed until after delivery

  • All ratings will depend on the benefit plan and deductible selected

  • If health information is discovered that is not on the application, it will be referenced as Protected Health Information and cannot be released to the agent per HIPAA guidelines,  Correspondance will be handled between the applicant and underwriting

  • Prescription drug usage will be rated for dosage and cost. This could result in an offer of no prescription coverage.
